First Crash for Hamilton
Just as the world gets ready to see Formula One rookie Lewis Hamilton win his first race, the young British driver crashed in the practice session for the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. The youngest ever driver to lead the driver’s championship looks like he can do nothing wrong after taking podium finishes in his first four races as a Formula One driver. With that achievement under his belt, Hamilton has a lot of people expecting him to perform at the highest level, including me, of course. I’ve been following the exploits of this driver since he joined the team I am rooting for – McLaren Mercedes.
The crash happened during the last half hour in the practice session for the most prestigious race in the Formula One season. Where else can you find a racing circuit as beautiful as the city streets of Monte Carlo with the breathtaking view of the city’s famous harbor?
Hamilton crashed his car at the tire wall at Sainte Devote which is the first turn at the end of the pit road. After the practice session, Hamilton addressed reporters admitting his fault. “Everyone makes mistakes, and I’m only human,” said the young driver. “I just locked the rear wheels, and just as it came before the apex I lost the back end, tried to brake too quick, but went off into the wall,” he explained.
Despite suffering the first crash of his young Formula One career, team boss Ron Dennis is still optimistic about the upcoming race. Speaking to reporters, he said: “This is a mistake that all drivers make; I’d rather it was in a practice session where he is finding the limits of the car than in a qualifying where it takes a penalty on the grid or hampers his race. Finding the limit at this circuit is challenging for any driver. I’d rather not have a bent racing car but in the circumstances we’re pretty comfortable with his contribution to the season.”
